7 Water Tank Noises and What They Mean

A well-maintained water storage tank system normally makes very little noise beyond the usual clicking as it goes on and off. You might also sometimes hear the sound of water entering or leaving the tank and building in the pipes. But when the unit produces more disconcerting sounds than usual, it might indicate a system problem that needs repair, recalibration, or replacement.

If you hear any of the following strange sounds, you must pay close attention.

1. Banging and hammering

This is the most common noise that a unit makes. The banging or hammering sound is also known as hydrostatic shock. When air is trapped in the system, the valves usually close too quickly. When valves shut quickly on rapidly flowing water, there is a pressure change that causes a shock wave that bang your plumbing.

2. Clicking

It is normal to hear a clicking sound as the water pump’s pressure control turns on and off. But if the clicks are accompanied with hums, it might signal a stuck relay switch, which potentially burns out the controls. A rapid, persistent clicking, however, might indicate a short cycling in the pump. Its most probable cause is waterlogging in the water pressure tank.

3. Clunking

You’ll usually notice this noise near the water pressure tank when the pump is switched on. If the clunking sound is bothersome, check the relay switch or check valves. The unit’s vibration might loosen these connections as sudden pressure change creates tremor.

4. Humming

Beware of the humming sound of the pump motor especially when it does not start. This kind of noise denotes a major concern in your system. More often than not, it will require an immediate repair to your water well pump. To avoid this scenario, train your ear to recognize the normal operating sounds of your system. This will help you identify when the humming is out of the ordinary.

5. Grinding and rattling

This type of noise is a critical red flag. A very obvious grinding sound in your water storage tank usually signals an impeller damage. It might be caused by a broken assembly or debris.

Pro Tip: Routine inspection of your water storage tank system should reduce or eliminate most strange sounds. Regular upkeep can also extend the service life of your unit and even increase its efficiency.
